It is a smaller hoster. The low number of sites ensures copious resources. The box is a custom managed linux box, which is very fast and well looked after. The hard drives are raid0 with constant monitoring on degradation. The colocation facility is in close proximity so our technician can physically get to the machine for hardware upgrades when required. Hot offsite backups can be had via a removable harddrive. The colocation facility itself (actually, the building in which it resides on the University of Calgary research grounds) has backup diesel generators and power filtering, so no ups is needed. A robust dual dual core opteron. They are workstation class processors which offer a huge amount of processing ability with a very fast memory interconnect speed. If we start simulating black hole birth, the cpu's can be upgraded to dual quad core, or the mobo swapped out for higher. Mail hosting is done by an enterprise quality mail hoster, with excellent uptime, response and with a great web mail interface. We have the ability to custom tailor the server to our needs. We are running some atypical software in order to give our websites more of what you want, which would be very difficult to do on a cookie cutter mass-hosted server. The Captain of the server is a computer science graduate and professional software developer that has been developing on and maintaining Linux boxes for well over a decade. He also runs his own sites off this server so he has a personal interest in keeping it running optimally. The system and application software is routinely upgraded for the latest security. Critical hosting issues are emailed directly to his cell for fast response. The system is quite secure, with only the essential ports being un-firewalled, and with no in-secure applications available to the outside world. Https is functioning and available. On-box security is tight, allowing for user-based per-file or per-site restrictions. Additional security related software may be installed as required.
